6. Q: I am been harassed by another QQ user - how can I stop this?

6. A: If the person who is harassing you is on your Buddy list (look in Strangers as well), delete him from your list. You do this by holding down the left mouse button over his icon and dragging it onto the Black List panel. Once you have done that, click on QQ Menu and select Preferences. You will see a check box next to "Block strangers' message". Tick the box. This will prevent any stranger from sending messages to you. Then go back to Menu, click on it and select the Personal Setting option. Select the Security tab and under authorisation tick the box that is appropriate to your privacy needs.

12. Q: Where does QQ come from?

12. A: QQ comes from China. The software was developed by Tencent Computer Systems in Shenzhen, about an hour's drive from Hong Kong on the Chinese mainland. It's a young company, just 4 [check this - probably old data. Perhaps, say what year they started, rather than how old?] years old and it has had remarkable success. QQ is one of the Big 4 in Instant Messaging, right up there with ICQ/AIM, Microsoft and Yahoo messengers, with tens of millions of users. QQ also has operations in Thailand, Japan and Indonesia. QQ Africa is the first full deployment in the English-speaking world.

13. Q: What's QQ's technology platform?

13. A: QQ is end-to-end Linux. It's a pure peer-to-peer IM system using the lightweight/sessionless UDP protocol for message and file transport, so it's super efficient. If you have comments and feedback about QQ, please email us at webmaster@qq.co.za

14. Q: Will QQ work anywhere? I have friends overseas and I want to QQ them. Can they use QQ too?

14. A: QQ can be used from anywhere in the world. Ask your friends to download and install the QQ software from this website and away you go.

15. Q: Can I use QQ with other IMs? I'm already using another Instant Messaging service. If I install QQ, will it interfere with the other IM?

15. A: You can install QQ alongside any other IM product like MSN Messenger, ICQ etc without any problems. The services operate quite separately and do not clash with each other.

16. Q: Will QQ work if I am behind a company or personal firewall? I have QQ running at home and it works perfectly. But now I want to use it at the office as well? Will it work?

16. A: Yes, QQ works behind firewalls, but you must be using the latest version of QQ (available on our website since June 26, 2003).

17. Q: Can QQ send/receive viruses? How safe is it?

17. A: Though no-one can give you a 100% guarantee, we believe QQ is one of the safest communication programs around. We have come across only one virus affecting some QQ users. Called the Wangy Worm, it was not in fact a QQ virus but an email virus sent out to steal email addresses stored in Outlook Express as well as QQ logins and passwords. The virus was specific to Chinese users. That being said, QQ's file transfer feature, which allows you to exchange files like MP3s or documents with your friends, should be used with caution. Never accept a file from someone you don't know. If in doubt, decline the file and the sender will not be able to transfer it to you. QQ will always require that you explicitly give your permission before receiving a file transfer. Please see the terms and conditions of using QQ.

18. Q: Help! I've lost my QQ password

18. A: QQ takes password protection seriously. There is only one way to retrieve a forgotten password and that is by having it emailed to the address you used when first registering for QQ. This is an automated process, so don't call us, don't email us and don't QQ us. We won't give it out. Click here to retrieve your QQ password.

19. Q: How do I get QQ on/off my screen easily? I use QQ all the time and need instant access to it, but sometimes my PC desktop is so cluttered with things that QQ gets in the way. Isn't there a simple way to make QQ appear/disappear?

19. A: QQ has a smart "docking" feature that keeps it out of the way as well as making it instantly available. To dock QQ, use your mouse to drag the control panel to the very top of your screen. When you move your mouse away, the control panel will vanish. Mouse over the area again and the QQ control panel will pop-up again.

20. Q: Small vs large icons. I have many QQ buddies on my Friends List but now I can't see all my online Friends at a glance. Can I make their icons smaller?

20. A: By right-clicking inside the QQ control panel, you can select Large or Small icons (the default setting is Large). By selecting Small Icon, your Friends' icons will shrink to a quarter their current size, opening up a lot more real estate in the control panel.

21. Q: My Files won't transfer. QQ's file transfer feature works great, but not all the time. Sometimes it just seems to hang. Why is this?

21. A: QQ's file transfer is sometimes thwarted by company firewalls. If both the sender and receiver are behind firewalls (e.g. if they are both using PCs in corporate offices), then QQ may not be able to complete the transfer. Dial-up users should have no problems at all.

22. Q: Why can't I access QQ chatrooms? I have been chatting on the Internet for years and use IRC software to access the various chatrooms. But I can't access QQ's chatrooms. Why?

22. A: The QQ chat system is not IRC compatible, which means that third party IRC client software like Mirc and Perch cannot be used. You have to use the QQ software to gain access to our rooms.

23. Q: Chatroom pest-control. I enjoy using the QQ chatrooms but sometimes I find that some people are really annoying. Is there any way I can block out the chatroom messages from certain users?

23. A: Yes, you can. In any chatroom, a list of all chatters appears in the right hand panel. Next to each one is a checkbox that's blank. Simply click on the checkbox next the icon of the person you don't want to "listen" to and a blockout confirmation will appear on screen. No messages posted by that person will in future appear on the chat screen. Simply uncheck the box to re-instate them.

24. Q: How do I put a chatroom buddy into My Friends list?. I met someone really nice in a QQ chatroom and now want to make him a Friend so we can QQ each other. Is there an easy way to do this?

24. A: QQ's Instant Messaging and Chat services are totally integrated. This makes it easy to "pull" chat room buddies into your Friends list. While chatting with a user, simply click once on his/her name in the right hand panel of the chat room. Select "Add to Contact List" from the pop-up menu and the person will be added to your Friends list.

25. Q: I use QQ on more than one PC, but I see my Friend's List is not the same on both machines. How do I synchronise the list so both PCs are up to date with the same friends?

25. A: QQ saves your Friend's list on each machine as well as on the server. When you start QQ, it retrieves your Friend's list from the PC in order to speed up the process. To update your PC with the latest Friend's list, click on Menu, select Register and re-register using your existing QQ Number and password. This will pull your Friend's list from the server and update your PC with your latest list of buddies.
