When you use QQ for the first time, chances are you haven't made any online friends yet. Your QQ Buddy list will be empty, just like Picture A.

But you want it to look more like Picture B. Filled with QQ friends.

Here are some easy ways for you to find and add new friends to your QQ Buddy list.

Buddy List your friends and invite them to join QQ and get chatting. All they have to do is visit www.qq.co.za and download QQ. Remember to give them your QQ Number so they can find you easily.

Use the Tell a Friend service. This is a quick and easy way to invite many friends at once to join you in the world of QQ. Click here to Tell a Friend.

Find friends in the chatrooms. Use QQ Chat and jump into a chatroom. If you meet interesting people, you can add them to your Buddy list. See QQ Chat for more info.

Search the QQ Member database. Hundreds of friends have already joined QQ and you can meet them all.

How to search the QQ Database

You can choose whether you want to find friends who are currently online and chatting, or you can have a peek at QQ's many members.

Search Online Members

Click on the Find button on the QQ control panel. In the new window that opens, select the "Check which users are online" and scroll through the list.

For more information about a QQ Member, double-click on their QQ Number.

If you want to add a QQ Member to your Buddy list: click once on their QQ Number to select them (their details will be highlighted) and then click the large Next button at the bottom of the window.

Depending on how that person has decided to protect his/her privacy (see Privacy and Security), they will either be added automatically to your Buddy list and you will be added to theirs, OR you will be asked to identify yourself and wait for the other user to authorise you as a Friend.

If that person has got strong privacy controls, however, chances are you won't be able to communicate with them. But if he or she accepts you as a Friend, his or her icon will now appear in the control panel and you can start sending.

Search Online & Offline Members

Make sure you are connected to the Internet and you have your QQ control panel open. (If it isn't already open, double-click on the penguin icon in your control panel.)

Click on the Find button on the QQ control panel. In the new window that opens, select the "Customised search" option and then click on the Next button at the bottom of the window.

You can search for your friends by their QQ Number, their QQ Nickname, or their Buddy List address. Only select the "Match Whole Words" option if you're absolutely sure of the details you'll be filling in. If you don't select it, all close matches will be displayed and you can decide from there.

For example, if you're looking for a friend called Raymond, and you know his QQ Number is 75258. Enter his number and click the Next button.

If the number is correct, a new window will open with Raymond's details displayed in it. Click on his entry to highlight it, and then click the large Next button at the bottom of the window. If Raymond accepts you as a Friend, his icon will appear in your QQ control panel.

To send him a message, you can either click once on his icon and then select "Send/Receive Message" OR you can double-click on the icon and a message window will appear. See QQ Help for more info.
